The Faculty of Horticulture was established during the year 1971 with the formation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The PG and Doctoral Programmes were also introduced during the year of inception. The undergraduate programme B.Sc. (Horticulture) was started during the year 1972 and later in 1990, the Programme was shifted to the Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam. At the time of formation of the University during 1971, the Departments of Fruit Crops, Flower Crops and Spices and Plantation Crops were established. Later, the Department of Vegetable Crops and Department of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops were started during the year 1979 and 2010 respectively. Earlier, a common PG and Ph.D. programme was offered and later four separate PG and Ph.D. programmes are being offered from each department.
After the formation of various Departments at HC & RI, TNAU, Coimbatore, intensive education, research and extension activities are pursued to promote the various branches including fruits, vegetables, spices, plantation crops, floriculture, landscaping, medicinal and aromatic crops with respect to crop improvement, production and post harvest management. Outcome of the research conducted at HC & RI, Coimbatore, resulted in the release of 12 fruit crop varieties, 59 vegetable crop varieties, nine spices and plantation crop varieties, nine flower crop varieties, one medicinal crop variety and improved production technologies for various crops. Besides the Faculty of Horticulture at Coimbatore, the Dean (Horticulture) of HC & RI, Coimbatore is entitled to direct administrative control over the Horticultural Research Stations at Ooty, Yercaud, Palur and Coconut Research Station at Aliyar, Veppankulam, Agricultural Research Station, Pattukkottai and technical control of the Regional Research Station at Paiyur, Agricultural Research Station at Bhavanisagar and Tuber Crop Research Station at Yethapur.

Hostel Management Committee
The Hostel Management Committee, an apex body of the hostel administration with Dean (Students Welfare) as chairman. The administrative and policy matters pertaining to hostels were approved by committee and also take important decisions and guidelines on various issues of the hostels.
Functioning of Messes
There is one centralized kitchen cum dining hall for ladies students, two modernized kitchen for gents’ students. In all the hostels both Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian foods are being served. Dividing system is being followed mess run by the students and monitored by the Wardens.
All the messes / dinning halls in the hostels are fully equipped with water purifiers, steam cooking system, steam plate washing systems and invertors for uninterrupted power supply. In addition to the above, FM radio/ music systems and coffee makers have also been provided at dining halls.
Students Cafeteria
The Student’s Cafeteria facility is available for both boys and girls near play ground. All the essential requirements including stationeries are being supplied to the students. The edible items at a low cost are being supplied for the benefit of the students.
Amenities
Each hostel is provided with a Reading Room, study room and a TV hall with LED TV with DTH facility. Guest room facilities are made available for the visitors / parents of the students. Based on the availability, the guest rooms are being provided to the student participants who are visiting the main campus, trainings seminars, workshops and other university functions etc.
The hostel administration has arranged facilities like photo copying, dry cleaning, saloon for men and parlour for women, cell phone recharge centre, two wheeler/cycle repairing centre and footwear repairing shop on “service rent” basis for the benefit of students.
Emergency Vehicle
A Maruti Omni Van and Maruti Ambulance (24 x 7) are available with hostel office and is being used as Emergency Vehicle to attend the sick students. A mobile phone is provided to the driver to contact him during emergency hours. One Bolero Maxi Truck and one Mini Auto is also available for transporting the materials to the students
Campus Interviews & Job Fairs
- Campus Interviews are regularly conducted in relation to employers’ indent.
- About 60 companies and other organizations participate annually in Campus Interviews.
- About 450-500 graduates get placed every year.
- Selection process includes written test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview.
- Job Fair benefits 300-350 students to get placed at once.
- Job Fair is conducted in March / April coinciding with closure of academic programmes.
- Job seekers are introduced to plethora of industries.
- Placement Officers meet of constituent colleges is held once in a year for further development of placement and higher education.

Health Care Unit
The TNAU dispensary has been functioning from June 20,1974. The medical facilities are utilized by students,faculty and other staff members,farm workers and their family members. The hospital functions with 3 Medical officers,1 Staff Nurse,2 Female Nursing Assistants and 1 Pharmacist. Apart from treating common illness and chronic diseases,emergency care is provided when needed.
The University dispensary supports for the health care activities to the students and staff members of the campus. The health centre has four bedded facilities to treat the patients for common health disorders with the required medical equipments for diagnosis and treatments.
