Different types of articles are written for different purposes, but the format remains the same. An article is a kind of writing that is meant to inform or entertain. Articles are published in newspapers, magazines and journals on various subjects ranging from literature to science, religion to politics etc.

The most common type of article is “the news article” that is published in newspapers. It contains all the basic elements of an article which includes, the heading or title, the introduction, body paragraphs and finally a conclusion.

● Headings/Title: The title of an article should be short but catchy. It should contain enough information to make it self-explanatory for people who are not familiar with the subject. The title should also be interesting so that people are encouraged to read the article.

● Introduction: This part of an article is usually in “inverted pyramid” form. It means that important information is placed at the beginning and less important details are added at the end. Thus, in order to write a captivating introduction, one has to follow all the rules of inverted pyramid. The first sentence should contain the “who”, “what”, “when” and “where”. The next paragraph or two should provide further details about the particular topic.

The last sentence in this part of an article is known as ‘the kicker’. It informs readers with important information that they should know about the story.

● Body paragraphs: The body of an article is made up of several paragraphs in which all the details are given. Some articles also contain additional elements like charts, graphs or pictures in this section. The writer can divide his information in various ways to make it easier for readers to understand the information.

Some writers divide this part into supporting statements and conclusions, but there is no specific format for writing body paragraphs.

● Conclusion: The concluding sentence of an article should be related to the heading or title so that readers can easily understand how he got to the final decision. It should clear any misconceptions about the subject presented in the article.

Article writing format makes the article much more interesting to read. It is also used as an educational tool to make students understand how articles are written. They can learn different types of articles by simply following the format that they have learned in their course. Only then, are they able to write effective articles that can inform or entertain readers.
